Eastern Guilford basketball coach Joseph Spinks is preparing his team for a tough conference road ahead as the 2021-22 season began last week.

It’s officially Basketball season for Eastern Guilford and head coach, Coach Spinks talks about expectations and goals for his team this year. On Dec. 1, the Wildcats had their first game of the season and fell to Northwest Guilford, 79-54.

‘’My expectations are we will probably have rough start” said Spinks, but he is looking to see growth this season. ‘’ I'm expecting the worst before it gets better.”

Khyair Lundy and Mykell Lawson are two key players coming back this season as captains.

“l only has 3 returning players and 2 who were in rotation from last year but by the end of the season we will be competing for a conference championship,” added Spinks.

With a new conference this year comes new competitions, such as, Atkins and Highpoint.

“It’s going to be a tough conference, it’s a basketball heavy competing conference.” said Spinks. The boys’ varsity will also compete against teams like Dudley, Smith, Rockingham County and Southern Guilford.

Spinks wants to add another conference championship to the record this year. With Eastern Guilford having many wins under the belt previously.

“Eastern has a tradition of winning conferences and finishing in first place, and that is our goal,” said Spinks, who continues to say “Am I predicting that, No.”

Always having high expectations Coach Spinks never wants to get in the way of his team hard work and dedication. “I don’t want pigeonhole us to and say well I expect us to win 2nd or 3rd place that would allow my kids not to play at their highest goal.

Eastern Guilford will be playing their first conference game Friday against Northern Guilford (8.00 p.m.) along with two other games Northwest (Tuesday, 7:30 p.m.) and Eastern Alamance (Thursday, 7:30pm).
