Harvey says 'relationships' key to EGHS success in 2021-22

Eastern Guilford High’s Coach Harvey sat down with me for an interview on Wednesday, Dec. 1 to discuss the new season for the girls’ basketball team and its importance.

The Varsity Girls’ Basketball team kicked off their new season on Tuesday night, facing Northwest Guilford, with a score of 61-35.

Though it was a loss for Eastern, Coach Harvey explains that it is relationships with her team that is the most beneficial to their growth and success.

“To me, having a relationship with my team is key,” she describes, “both off the court as much as on the court.”

Coach Harvey continues,

“Honestly, seeing them play hard during their first game was the biggest highlight for me. To me, it showcased their growth.”

Coach Harvey has been coaching for eight years now, and recognizes the hardships a coach faces.

“The hardest part about being a coach is switching things up, staying motivated, trying to figure out what works best for the team.”

Having played basketball herself in high school, she understands the mental preparation for an upcoming basketball game.

To her, honesty is the best policy, and telling the truth, matters. One piece of advice that she has always stuck to is explaining to her team that they are more than capable of going against anyone.

“The game itself did get away from us more than I would have wanted it to during the second half, but, we did have a lot of good things to off of,” Coach Harvey explains “yet, having fun and just playing hard is what meant the most.”

As everyone understands, COVID-19 has impacted the world and how we see things now. Coach Harvey explains how she feels the pandemic has personally impacted athletics in general.

“Ever since the pandemic, students are not as interested or invested in athletics as they used to be.”

She suggests,

“What was a priority before, may not be a priority now.”

This season of basketball, Coach Harvey is looking forward to facing off against different teams, but which game is she looking forward to the most?

“All of them!” she says, with a goal in mind, “I would like to get into the playoffs this season with my team.”

She adds that she takes one game at a time, and for her, it is all about the growth for the girls’ basketball team here at Eastern.

“I look forward to every single game as it is another opportunity to showcase how much they have improved and grown.”

The ladies of the basketball team will continue their season this week with three upcoming games. This calls for a busy week for the Varsity girls as they make their way towards the conference championships.

Eastern Guilford will face off Northwest Guilford again Dec. 7 at 6:30 PM. The team will also play two other games, with Eastern Alamance on Dec. 8 at 6:00 PM, and their first conference game with Northeast Guilford will be on Dec. 9 at 6:30 PM.
